My 2017 water pump started leaking at 38K miles. I was surprised. I fortunately got the dealer to do it under warranty even though I was slightly out. Has anybody else seen that?

They were not being generous. The water pump is considered part of the powertrain warranty:

So you are well within your covered warranty period.
That's great info, My 2017 SEL is just about ready to go 36kmi and I've noticed my coolant level is lower than when new (almost to the ADD mark) and have been worried that after our 2017's pass the 36kmi mark we're SOL. Car is currently a dealer getting a couple things fixed before warranty is up. I didn't realize some of the power train has a longer warranty period. I've concerned the water pump housing could have a small leak dealer service advisor said the coolant can evaporate, I told him my 1999 Jetta have NEVER evaporated a drop of coolant, he said the newer VW's have a cap that vents and over time coolant can show a slight loss. I don't know if that's true or not. But good to know I'm covered up to 60kmi.
