Any feedback from AT owners in the far northern states on what works?
Esp on the Nokians.

Thoughts on buying cheep steelies to mount them on, to keep it simple?
Thinking of using 17s to give room later with spacers for a AudiTT brake upgrade...

but then it seems you need to invest in lift kit and Atlas shocks to make that work...plus alignment, etc.

so KISS...first do wheels and winter tires for a season...
what say y'all...

How about chains as needed? Wary with tight fitment...anyone use them, problems?

Not far north, but Colorado where it snowed today! I wanted Nokians this season but nobody had any more stock by January. I've run them in the past and they live up to their reputation. Current snows are Dunlop Wintersport 3D's 225/50-17 which do an admirable job this winter.

Just get a set of winter tires, you don't need chains.

Even though didn't have a terrible winter in Colorado Springs this year. The few real bad days the VW was great with the Nokian Hakkapelitta R3

Thank you. Just ordered Nokian R3 SUV version (aramid fibers in sidewall for extra durability) and 16" RTV Steelies

Have been running the Nokian (R2, older version) on wife's Miata for a few winters. They do well, toss up between those and Michelin X-ice 3
