Just picked up a used S3 and was wondering what the oil interval change is for the motor. I had a Focus ST prior to this and I did oil changes every 5k miles. Also, I'm new to the Audi/VW world, what oil/filters do our cars take? Thanks in advance for the help!

Congrats and welcome aboard. Audi recommends oil changes every 10k miles, but I've been doing it every 7k.

My dealer uses Castrol 5W-40 full synthetic motor oil.

Thanks for the reply! Wow 10k seems fairly high, I will probably end up doing them between 7-8k to play it safe. I am assuming it's about 6qts of oil? Thanks for the info!

Oil is cheap, engines are expensive. I change mine every 5K. Makes me feel better.

I was shocked when I heard 10k miles. I think I will do 5k just for some piece of mind, regardless if it's synthetic or not. Does anyone know if 5W-30 hurts the engine? I bought the car used from a BMW dealership and they used a 5W-30, though the previous owner took it to the Audi Dealership to get this done at 5k and 15k and I'm assuming they used the Castrol 5W-40 which is what is recommended. I still have 5qts of Eneos Fully Synthetic for my previous car that I was going to use, but not sure if I should use it when I change the oil at 30k. Is Castrol 5W-40 a good oil? I've also heard good things about Liqui-Moly.

Same thing happened to me! The dealership I got mine from used 5W-30. I looked up the maintenance schedule from Audi and they said either 5W-30 or 5W-40 is fine. I'm almost due for my next oil change and I will probably end up using 5W-40 since I believe that is what Audi recommends for the motor. Don't know a whole lot about Castrol, but if Audi recommends I'm sure it has to be pretty decent!

I change the oil/filter in my cars every 5K. Cheap insurance. But I do it myself so that keeps the cost down too.

Getting ready to take a short trip up to the Northwest and the car was just short of 10K miles. Decided to change the oil before hitting the road. Had the dealer do the 5K to take advantage of having them check the car over. My car does not have an oil drain plug on the synthetic pan...just the low oil level sensor stuff mounted. The dealer had mentioned that they prefer to pull the oil up through the dipstick housing. I have a nice hand pump device with a 6.5 quart capacity tank that I bought from Griots years ago to pull the oil out of the big Oldsmobile engine in my ski boat. The pump's tube fits nicely down the Audi dip stick housing and fairly quickly pulled all 6 quarts of oil out. Just for info, Griots still sells those hand pumps for about $95.00. It doesn't take many dealer oil changes for those of you who are not comfortable with the 10K mile service interval to pay for that pump! If you choose to do this yourself, I'd pull the oil out while it's relatively warm/hot. You may have noticed that our oil filter sits right on top of the engine. You will need a 32mm socket for this. If you drain the oil first, all the oil will drain out of the filter housing while the car is sitting and it will be pretty mess-free when you take it off. Got a quality WIX oil filter element from my local parts store (WIX WL 10024, which has a replacement O ring for the housing included) and completed the job in about 30 minutes without ever having to crawl under the car. Again, for info, there are several you-tube videos which will show you how to correctly get the filter element in the housing... it's really very simple.
